A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE SEXUAL HEALTH ADVOCATE PEER EDUCATION (SHAPE)’S “GET YOURSELF TESTED PROGRAM”
PURPOSE: To show support (non-monetarily) for the Sexual Health Advocate Peer Education (SHAPE)’s Get Yourself Tested Program, which will now be referred to as GYT, a free, semi-monthly Sexual Transmitted Infection testing service.
WHEREAS, The GYT campaign is a youthful, empowering social movement to encourage young people to get tested and treated, as needed, for STDs, including HIV; AND
WHEREAS, GYT increases awareness about STDs and how to prevent them; links young people to STD testing services; and promotes a more open dialogue with partners and health care providers; AND
WHEREAS, GYT encourages testing for STDs, including HIV, as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and empowers young people to have an open dialogue about STDs; AND
WHEREAS, Young people account for half of the 20 million new Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDS) occurring in the US each year; AND
WHEREAS, One in 12 people infected with Gonorrhea or Chlamydia don’t know they are infected; AND
WHEREAS, This vital program is unsure where it will receive funding in the upcoming 2015-2016 term; AND
WHEREAS, It is the responsibility of Missouri Students Association Senate to protect programs that directly benefit student lives.
THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION SENATE that The Missouri Students Association Senate will stand in support (non-monetarily) of the GYT program.
