A RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE STUDENT OPINION ON COLUMBIA CITY ORDINANCE 21390, SECTION 14-180 TO THE CAMPUS PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE AND THE CAMPUS SAFETY COMMITTEE
PURPOSE: To urge the joint committee consisting of the Campus Parking and Transportation Committee and the Campus Safety Committee to take into consideration the student opinion regarding the enforcement of Section 14-180 of Columbia City Ordinance 21390.
WHEREAS, the recent enforcement of Columbia City Council’s Ordinance 21390, Section 14-180 has displaced students from a previously utilized, safe, climate controlled, and convenient location in the MU Student Center; AND
WHEREAS, Hitt Street, at a width of 26 feet of traversable space, cannot safely accommodate the traffic from pedestrians, apartment shuttles, and miscellaneous vehicles; AND
WHEREAS, the portion of Rollins Road, in front of the Student Center, at 45 feet of traversable space, was designed for, and can accommodate, traffic from both city buses and private apartment shuttles; AND
WHEREAS, the displacement of private shuttle routes has forced the shuttles to proceed on longer routes through highly trafficked areas on campus, thus increasing the risk of pedestrian injury; AND
WHEREAS, the Missouri Students Association has previously passed Resolution 54-02 expressing the student body opinion urging the city council to cease enforcement of and/or repeal ordinance 21390 section 14-180 in the interest of student safety and well-being.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION HERE ASSEMBLED that the Missouri Students Association takes a uniform stance urging the joint committee to take into consideration the aforementioned student concerns and suggest to the City Council to cease enforcement of and/or repeal the Columbia City Ordinance 21390, Section 14-180.
