A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE GOVERNOR’S VETO OF HOUSE BILL 253

PURPOSE:  To support the Governor’s veto of House Bill 253 and oppose any attempt to override the veto.

WHEREAS, House Bill 253 ends a sales tax exemption on the purchase of textbooks that will raise prices for students by approximately 4%; AND

WHEREAS, House Bill 253 will slash an estimated $900 million from the state of Missouri’s revenue; AND

WHEREAS, reduced revenue is likely to result in reduced appropriations for the University of Missouri; AND

WHEREAS, the UM System and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce have announced their opposition to House Bill 253 and engaged in lobbying against its passage; AND

WHEREAS, UM System President Tim Wolfe has stated publicly “To make up for the gap in funding, we’d have to raise tuition anywhere from 8 to 16 percent.”; AND

WHEREAS,
the students of the University of Missouri are opposed to both reduced funding for the University of Missouri and large tuition increases.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION SENATE that MSA supports the Governor’s veto of House Bill 253 and all efforts by the Association to sustain the Governor’s veto.
