Missouri Students Association

Bill 49-89

A Resolution in Support of Protecting Merit-Based Funding

Purpose: To show support against reducing merit based-funds.

WHEREAS, thousands of University of Missouri students receive merit-based funding in the form of scholarships due to their scholastic achievement, and

WHEREAS, these funds are logically the property of the student due to their good deeds, hard work and/or outstanding performance, and

WHEREAS, students are potentially at risk of losing these funds, and

WHEREAS, the University of Missouri reserves the right to reduce a student’s merit-based funds, if the student’s financial aid package exceeds the amount of the “expected cost of attendance,” and

WHEREAS, adhering to this amount deemed as the typical student’s cost of attendance to this institution ignores frequent atypical financial situations students endure, and

WHEREAS, adhering to this amount deemed as the typical student’s cost of attendance to this institution discourages their scholastic endeavors by reducing the money they earned through their own personal endeavors and success,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Missouri Students Association Senate that students are adamantly opposed to the reduction of merit-based funding and call for these funds to NO LONGER be reduced under any circumstances,

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this act will signify student entitlement to the funds in which they put forth effort to obtain and commend those efforts.

Respectfully Submitted,

Lakeisha Williams, MCI Vice Chairwoman
