A Resolution in Support of Veteran’s Week at the University of Missouri

WHEREAS, the University of Missouri strives to be a place where defenders of our nation can feel at ease, and,

WHEREAS, the University has a long tradition of honoring those who gave their lives for their country, as the Tower in Memorial Union was constructed to honor those students and alumni who lost their lives during World War I, and has become a tribute to all those of the MU family who lost their lives in U.S. conflicts and wars, and,

WHEREAS, for the last two years, as symbol of thanks and recognition, the University of Missouri has been host to two weeks dedicated to Veterans and their sacrifice, and,

WHEREAS, the Veterans Week events have included bring speakers to campus, such as retired U.S. Admiral William Fallon, and Matt Eversmann; showing the films Taking Chance and Black Hawk Down; holding parades from the University to the Boone County Courthouse; and wreath laying ceremonies under the tower of Memorial Union, and,

WHEREAS, Veterans Week is not only a way to remember those who died for their county, but also those who were prepared to make the supreme sacrifice for their country in defense of those sacred ideals of liberty, freedom, and justice for all, and,

WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here[Gettysburg] have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION thatas the Undergraduate Representative body of the University of Missouri, MSA resolves to support Veterans Week and uphold the ideals of freedom, justice, and liberty embodied by those who serve their country and those who gave the last full measure of devotion.
