49-67: A Resolution In Support Of S.A.F.R.A.

PURPOSE: To state the support of the Missouri Students Association of the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009

WHEREAS, This bill would provide a multitude of benefits for the Association’s student constituents including:

  • Investing $40 billion into the Pell Grant program which would raise the maximum amount students are able to receive to $5500 this year and to $6900 by 2019
  • Investing $3 billion into programs that provide support for accessing and completing college
  • Expanding Perkins Loan so that students at any campus in the country could access it (at present approximately 495,000 college students use this loan)
  • Capping interest rates on federal loans at 6.8% and keeps some loans under that rate
  • Simplifying the FAFSA form
  • Providing loan forgiveness for members of the military who are called to serve during the academic year, and

WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives has already passed this bill,and

WHEREAS, the United States Senate has yet to vote on this bill.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION thatboth Senator Claire McCaskill and Senator Kit Bond especially are strongly encouraged to support this bill, and take any necessary steps to assure its timely passage, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in order to ensure that this resolution is executed effectively all representatives of the Missouri Students Association who attend the “Big 12 on the Hill” conference in Washington D.C. discuss H.R. 3221 with any and all representatives of Missouri with whom they meet, reiterating our support of this bill
