A Resolution to Give the Department of Student Life an Inflationary Increase

WHEREAS, the department of student life supports 18 different offices with 9 of those offices receiving student fees; AND

WHEREAS, all offices receiving student fees focus on the delivery of programs and services for all students (both graduate and undergraduate); AND

WHEREAS, during the 2008-2009 academic year the Department of Student Life implemented approximately 450 educational, social, and cultural programs open to all students; AND

WHEREAS, the mission of Student Life is to promote student involvement on campus; AND

WHEREAS, Student Life has shown that students who participate in social and educational programs are more likely to peruse more complex ways to participate in campus activities; AND

WHEREAS, Student Life has shown that students who become involved in activities are more likely to enjoy their college experience; AND

WHEREAS, according to a Student Life survey involving MU undergraduate students found that students involved in organizations reported having a higher GPA; AND

WHEREAS, Student Life reported that 75% of MU students have used a Student Life office or service; AND

WHEREAS, the current student fee collected is $16.81 per student per semester; AND

WHEREAS, Student Life employs 52 staff members, 35 graduate assistants, and more than 900 students who are either paid or are volunteers in various roles within student life; AND

WHEREAS, the Department of Student Life may be granting their 52 staff members an inflationary increase in their salaries (University approval pending); AND

WHEREAS, the costs of goods is increasing every year with the inflation; AND

WHEREAS, the Department of Student Life has shown, in the past, that the use of student fees are used in a productive manner.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STUDENT FEE REVIEW COMMITTEE that the department of Student Life receive an increase in student fees not below 0% but no higher than the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index as defined by the Missouri Higher Education Student Funding Act of 2007.
