University of Missouri – Columbia

Bill #49-37

A Resolution in Favor of Creating a Student Friendly Transit System from the University of Missouri-Columbia to Jefferson City

WHEREAS, the University of Missouri has numerous students who commute to Jefferson City to work in the capital and/or conduct business there on behalf of the University, and,

WHEREAS, these students and groups are expected to arrange their own transportation means, and,

WHEREAS, there are students at the University who do not have their own vehicle with them at the University for any number of reasons making transport for them problematic, and,

WHEREAS, a transit system between Jefferson City and the Campus will enable more opportunities for more students, not only in Columbia and Jefferson City, but elsewhere in Missouri and,

WHEREAS, by providing students with a transit method at least as far as Jefferson City, further connections to other cities within and without Missouri can be achieved by AmTrak, and,

WHEREAS, at least nine other cities in Missouri can be reached daily via AmTrak from Jefferson City, including Kansas City, St. Louis, Independence, Kirkwood and Lee’s Summit, and,

WHEREAS, by encouraging students to travel on AmTrak many benefits can be derived for multiple sectors, including a reduction of cars on the highways, stimulation of local economies in cities along the rail line, and the possible enticement of non-Missouri residents into staying in Missouri after graduation.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENT’S ASSOCAITION SENATE that efforts be made in conjunction with interested parties to develop a transportation system that would allow students without their own means of efficient transportation to travel between Jefferson City and the University of Missouri.

Respectfully Submitted,
