48-115: An Act to Establish a Readership Pilot Program for Fall 2009

PURPOSE: To provide students with another valuable resource as well as ensure that readership carryover is used on the readership program.


WHEREAS, The Readership Program will have approximately $12,000 of carryover from the 2008/2009 school year, and


WHEREAS, The carryover will NOT roll over unless there is a plan of action, and


WHEREAS, MSA Department of Student Services ran an assessment from April 13ththrough April 17th, 2009 that received 80 respondents, and


WHEREAS, 30% of the respondents wanted to pilot The Wall Street Journal, 25% wanted to pilot Time Magazine, 18.75% wanted to pilot Newsweek Magazine, and 18.75% wanted to pilot National Geographic Magazine, and


WHEREAS, Upon meeting with the University of Missouri The Wall Street Journal representative, they do not offer any form of a readership program and are unwilling to sell to anyone other than personal subscriptions.


THEREFORE BE IT ENACTED BY THE MISSOURI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION SENATE THAT the Department of Student Services put together a Readership Pilot Program for fall semester 2009, utilizing the carryover funding from the 2008/2009 school year, that will provide students with access to one of the following publications, exploring Time Magazine first, Newsweek second, and National Geographic third.
