47-51: A Joint Resolution to Designate the Fourth Tuesday in September as MU International Day

PURPOSE: To designate each fourth Tuesday in September as MU International Day to honor international students and faculty at the University of Missouri.

WHEREAS, In 2006-2007, International student enrollment reached 1336 students; increasing 3.2 % from the previous year, and

WHEREAS, Approximately ninety-five different nationalities are represented within the MU international student community, and

WHEREAS, In 2006 the number of MU students studying abroad reached 829, up from 296 in 1996-1997, and

WHEREAS, In 2006 International Visiting Scholars reached a record level of over 800, and

WHEREAS, The University of Missouri has over 20 international organizations, some over 50 years old, and

WHEREAS, MU Chancellor Brady Deaton’s “priorities for action” include “celebrating the diversity of an international university and increased engagement with our campus, state and global communities,” and

WHEREAS, The MU Campus Dining Services Special Events Group has agreed to hold a “global food tour” on the fourth Tuesday in September to coincide with the proposed MU International Day.

THEREFORE: Be it resolved by the Missouri Students Association Senate and Missouri International Student Council General Assembly that the fourth Tuesday in September is designated as MU International Day, and

THEREFORE, Be it further resolved that the fourth Tuesday in September will also be the annual date of the MSA International Programming Committee’s International Bazaar, and
