46-56: An Act to Increase the Spending Limit for Presidential Campaigns

PURPOSE: To amend the bylaws to increase the spending limit for the Missouri Students Association’s presidential/vice-presidential campaigns.

WHEREAS, the current maximum amount of expenditure allowed by a slate in the Missouri Students Association’s presidential/vice-presidential election is $1000,

WHEREAS, this current cap places the Missouri Students Association’s presidential/vice-presidential slate’s election expenditures as the third lowest in the Big 12,

WHEREAS, the lowest spending limit in the Big 12 is currently Baylor, with an enrollment of 13,975 students, at $800,

WHEREAS, Kansas State is the only other Big 12 school lower with an $800 spending limit for the presidential ticket only,

WHEREAS, the highest spending limit in the Big 12 is unlimited,

WHEREAS, an increase in the current spending limit will allow candidates to reach a higher number of students,

WHEREAS, increasing each candidates ability to reach more students advertises the election itself and should increase the number of voting students,

WHEREAS, the Missouri Students Association’s Presidential and Vice-Presidential positions are prestigious and powerful positions,

WHEREAS, the Missouri Students Association is an active and influential student government,

THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Missouri Students Association Senate that Chapter 5 (Association Election Laws), Section 5.15 (B) of the bylaws be amended:

(B) LIMITS OF EXPENDITURE
(1) Campaign expenses shall be set at $1,000 for each slate.

Campaign expenses shall be set at $2,000 for each slate
